DFA Tutorial Technical Specifications

  • NOTE
    • It is important to consult with your technical staff prior to making any changes to your system!

Tutorial: Speed/Memory/Pop-Up Blocker/Graphics:

  • To help prevent difficulties relating to speed of loading and memory, you should quit ALL other programs that may be running (especially EUDORA).
  • Please turn off pop-up blocker software. These tutorials will not start if you are running pop-up blocker software.
  • If you have been viewing a considerable amount of graphics prior to running the exam you should restart your machine if you experience problems.  You  should also clear the temporary files stored in your browser (i.e., Tools>Internet Options>Delete Files)

Acceptable Java Versions:

We suggest you use the Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) for Java to run this application. To determine if the settings of the machine that you are using are acceptable, visit:

http://training.finance.cornell.edu/cm_images/uploads/tutorials/exams/browsertest/testbrowser.shtml

  • This program will not function properly if you have turned off Java or JavaScript on your browser. Settings for this are located in Internet Explorer under the Tools menu: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab (click all boxes for Microsoft VM or Sun).  You may need to restart for changes to take effect.

If you use the Microsoft Windows operating system, we recommend that you download and install the original Microsoft VM in your browser (see link below):

  Microsoft VM (.zip file)

For ToolBook 2004, other officially supported versions of the Sun Microsystems Java VM (JVM) are:

  1.3.1_01
  1.3.1_02
  1.4.1_05

NOTE: Version 1.4.2 has been shown to cause Internet Explorer to produce occassionally a general protection fault fatal error upon exit of a LMS launched course.

If you find you are having problems using a different version of the Sun Microsystems JVM, our recommendation is to use one of these supported versions instead, or switch to the Microsoft JVM.

End user set-up issues:

  • Because we have had several PC users indicate that they do not see the text at the bottom of the screen, we recommend the exams be viewed with the monitor screen resolution set to 1024 x 768, small font. To change your settings, open the Control Panel, select Display, select the Settings tab, and change the font size from large fonts to small fonts (96dpi for XP).

  • Some monitor color depth settings have difficulty handling the quick changes in pages that the tutorial loads. If you see distorted colors, simply minimize the screen, then bring it back up, and it should be fine. Color depth settings may be changed, but we suggest you consult with your technical person prior to making any changes.

  • This program should run on Netscape version 4.06 or later; however, we are finding that users may have difficulty loading the exam. We suggest that using IE 5.5 thru IE 6.02 (preferred) to take these exams. The exams will not run on a Mac.
